Think Earth Environmental Education Program (Grades K-8)

Suppose all of the children in your school or your community began to:

recycle papers, bottles, and cans
dispose of wastes properly
walk, bike, or carpool whenever possible
use electricity, water, natural gas, paper, and other resources wisely.

Students can learn these and other environmental behaviors with the Think Earth Environmental Education Program.

Think Earth
is a comprehensive, award-winning program for school classrooms. Nine units are available— one for each grade level from preschool through grade 8.

In all Think Earth units, students learn the importance of a clean, healthy environment
air, land, and water and they learn what they can do to "think earth," meaning . . .

conserve natural resources
reduce waste
and minimize pollution.

The Units

Each unit emphasizes the Think Earth message while focusing on a specific theme.

Preschool focuses on conservation. Children learn how and why to turn off lights, televisions, and water when they are not being used. Children also learn how to recycle newspapers, cans, and bottles, and how to dispose of trash properly so they don't litter. Along with the delightful Think Earth video, flannel-board stories are used to emphasize and practice the environmental messages.

Kindergarten
focuses on conserving trees and other resources. Stories about Jay and his treehouse show students that trees provide us with many benefits, including fresh air, wood, and paper, and students learn the importance of using paper, water, electricity, and other resources wisely.

Grade 1 focuses on conserving natural resources. Bernie, the runaway school bus, helps students learn that recycling, along with using water, paper, electricity, and natural gas wisely, are important ways to conserve natural resources. Students discover that everything comes from the environment.

Grade 2 focuses on the 3R's— reduce, reuse, recycle. Three mischievous Rascals show students that by practicing the 3 R's, they can not only reduce the amount of solid waste that gets buried in landfills, but also conserve natural resources, save energy, and reduce pollution.

Grade 3 focuses on creating less pollution. Trashbot, a combination trash can and robot, helps students learn that waste from the production, distribution, consumption, and disposal of products can pollute our land, water, and air. They discover what they can do to help control pollution and improve the quality of our environment.

Grade 4
focuses on reducing solid and liquid waste. Students learn where our trash and waste water come from and where they go. They discover ways to reduce the amount of solid waste, hazardous waste, and waste water we produce, which will help conserve natural resources, limit pollution, and keep the environment clean.

Grade 5
focuses on pollution solutions. Students learn about the causes and effects of smog, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, groundwater and soil pollution, and surface water and ocean pollution. They discover ways that everyone can help minimize pollution.

Grade 6 focuses on sustaining natural resources. Students learn about the benefits of the natural environment and learn that overuse of our natural resources can cause problems, such as loss of habitat, loss of biodiversity, pollution, and food and water shortages. Students discover many ways to conserve natural resources and use them in sustainable ways.

Middle School (Grades 7-8) focuses on transportation and air quality.

Air Care is an exciting new environmental curriculum that gets middle-school students involved. Through science activities and a newspaper targeted specifically for them, students learn:
    the causes of air pollution
    the effects on our health
what's been done to control air emissions
what technological solutions lie ahead (new cars, new fuels, new engines, new highways)
what they can do - as citizens, as consumers, and as future drivers to help take care of the air
The Air Care Program is a multi-disciplinary curriculum with a strong focus on science. Much of the content directly addresses 8th-grade physical science and chemistry frameworks, and activities also correlate with performance standards in math and language arts.

The Air Care unit is complete and easy to use. Each Kit includes:

Teacher's Guide, with:
    procedures for Basic Lessons
    suggestions for additional activities
    student questions, quizzes, and assessments
list if additional resources, including web sites
    glossary
    transparency masters
The Last Gasp Gazette
100 copies of a full color, tabloid-sized newspaper produced specifically for the middle-school audience.

Air Care 101 Video
