Energy Source Education Program

Learning about energy with Energy Source units is . . .
Easy . . . Fun . . . Interactive . . . Effective!

Four newly developed units are now included in the Energy Source program:

Offalot for Pre-K and Kindergarten
Energy Elves for Grades 1 and 2
Energy Explorers for Grades 3 and 4
People Power for Grades 5 and 6

With Energy Source, teachers can simply open the box and start teaching. Each instructional unit contains all the materials needed:

Teacher Guide
Posters
Student Booklet or Worksheets
Home Activity Sheets

Other materials, depending on the unit, include:

Flannel Board Cut-Outs
Picture Cards
Puppet
Transparency
Storybook
Video

Each unit contains 5 to 10 lessons along with pre- and post-program activities and assessments. Throughout each unit are also many suggestions for extension activities to provide extra practice, to expand the program, and to connect the unit to other curricular areas.

Offalot

"This is the most informative, easy-to-teach kit I've seen in my 15 years of teaching."
-- Kindergarten Teacher, St. Paul, MN

"My students fell in love with Offalot. They absolutely loved every lesson."
-- Kindergarten Teacher, San Diego, CA

Offalot features a furry, very popular puppet that helps teach preschoolers and kindergartners important concepts about energy conservation and safety. Through stories depicted on a flannel board, songs, interactive exercises, and hands-on activities, students learn:

what energy users are (lamp, furnace, car, etc.) and what they do
how to be safe around energy users
how and why to conserve energy.

Offalot has quite an impact on behavior; children really do turn off lights, televisions, and water— they really learn to turn things "off a lot"!

Energy Elves

Energy Elves gets students in grades 1 and 2 involved in learning how we get and use energy. Stories, role-playing, exercises, and activities help students learn practical concepts in energy and science:

when energy is being used (heat, light, motion)
how energy users operate (electricity, natural gas, heating oil, gasoline, sun)
how energy gets to our homes (wires, pipes, trucks)
why it is important to conserve energy (help save money and environment)

The delightful Energy Elves that appear in this unit help teach students that they, too, can become energy elves by practicing energy-saving behaviors.

Energy Explorers

Energy Explorers encourages 3rd- and 4th-grade students to investigate energy through experiments, demonstrations, surveys, and other hands-on, brains-on activities. Students discover:

energy sources . . . facts about oil, coal, natural gas, hydropower, nuclear energy, wind power, solar energy, and bioconversion- including advantages and disadvantages of each
electrical generation . . . how each source is used to produce electricity
energy safety . . . rules to follow to be safe around electricity, natural gas, and gasoline
energy conservation . . . how to conserve energy and why conservation is important

In this unit, students receive "Explorer Guides" that not only provide information but also lead them to their own discoveries about energy.

People Power

People Power
teaches 5th- and 6th-grade students that people the students themselves, their parents, and others have the power to create a bright energy future and a clean and healthy environment. From their student books, the video, demonstrations, problems, activities, and a home energy survey, students learn:

how we use energy (produce electricity, drive vehicles, manufacture products, heat buildings)
why it is important to use energy wisely (protect the environment, make our energy supply last longer, save money)
how individuals and families can save energy
what government and industry are doing to help save energy.

This unit features the "Future World" video about the energy adventure of two kids whose video game transports them into the year 2050. Students see in this video how our energy use behaviors today can affect the energy supply in the future.
